I have tried posting this message on at least 5 different forums but up to now I have not found a solution.
I cannot play DVDs in WMC or VLC Media Player at all and in WMP they play the initial FBI screens and the start of the 20 Century Fox Intro but after about 10 seconds the film stops and cannot be re-started, the only way out is to close the program. When this happens the DVD / HDD activity light continues to stay lit and in Task Manager WMP process is still running. If you select to end the process nothing happens, after a couple of tries and a long wait the process finally stops and the HDD activity light stops.
I also cannot install a game from a PC DVD?
I have installed the latest Geforce Drivers and the latest nForce Drivers, I have also installed Shark007 Codecs.
I have not installed the MCP68 Drivers from the abit web site but these are just for the onboard graphics aren't they?
There is a also a download for an AHCI installation disk but only a 2000 and XP version do I need this?
When I install the nForce Chipset Drivers it make no mention that it is installing the SATA and LAN drivers and only mentions graphics drivers??
Does anyone have any ideas, I tried emailing this to nVidia but the email bounced back as not recognised, I have posted on the nVidia Forums but no replies. I posted on Windows Answers but just some Tech telling me to try anything that did nothing.

jonnyalpha, hi what edition of win,7 do have you got ??.on reading your post is the film a original copy try another film what happens ?
All versions of Win 7 have the codecs needed to play DVD's except Home Basic. (I think).
Try disabling Windows Media Player in Control Panal/Programs and Features/Turn Windows Features On Or Off, expand 'Media Features' and uncheck 'Windows Media Player'. Restart your computer them re-enable WMP and restart again. This resets everything back to default values.
well,well tech-no i believe thats not correct on all win 7 have codecs cause the small note book that has no cd/dvd do not have one cause i had to put one on sir.
jonny, believe u should run malwarebyes first, cause i use shark and it had a virus,( cause some virus can make your cd/dvd player do crazy things had it happy to me) on your codec try (COLE 2K.MEDIA) i find this to work great !
And this is old school try this MPLAY32 ( MEDIA PLAYER) this should work. also if this dont try updating your drivers.
If that dont work you may have a bad dvd player.
Have you looked at your region settings? Device manager>DVD /CD rom>properties>region tab. If your DVD's are region protected and you have th eincorrect settings they may not play.

Welcome to the best forum in the world, and if we can't help you then no one can!!
From what I have read of what you have said, the problem occurred once you have installed windows 7. Have you tried reinstalling windows 7, (in order to reinstall it you just click up grade for that only installs the registry files again). this might help. It can't be a hardware problem if the problem occurred as soon as you installed windows 7. If this does not work then try Tech-No says.

Marks100 - This is Windows 7 Build 7600 and the film I am playing is an original.
Tech-No - Think I already did that but I'll give it a go - VLC Media Player and WIndows Media Centre will not play at all.
bbhat - I'll try MPLAY32 but I know the DVD Drive is good as when I boot into XP I can play DVDs no problems.
germ-x - Region is set to Region 2 (Europe I believe)
studio - I will try a reinstall
what 'version of win,7... starter, home basic, home premimum,ect,ect, ?
in help +support 'type in....' windows media player settings' in drop box look @num, 4 give that a go.

No 4 is 'Change volume settings in Windows Media Player' how will that help?
I used num 2 Windows Media Player Settings Trouble Shooter and changed back to default but still no joy.
I just booted into XP to confirm that in XP a DVD in Windows Media Player plays fine no problems whatsoever.
I just booted in Windows 7 and after installing Cole 2K.Media codecs I can now actually get VLC to start to play a DVD (previously it would not even start) but it too freezes for about 5 minutes then starts again.
My memory settings are manually configured in BIOS because the Abit Phoenix Award BIOS screws up the settings when in default, the memory is set to 4.4.4.12 2T.
Should I maybe lower the settings.
I tried to do a repair install of Windows 7 but because of the problems with this DVD drive and Windows 7 I cannot do it. When you insert the windows 7 DVD the green bar at the top of the Windows Explorer Windows takes forever to complete and the DVD Drive Icon does not change to the Windows 7 DVD Icon, the HDD light remains solid while the DVD is being read which takes forever.
Just as I finished typing this the DVD drive span into life again and the Autoplay window opened, so I clicked Run Setup.exe.
This is taking absolutely ages!!!!
This is definitely am Abit / nVidia / Windows 7 problem however I don't think I'm ever going to resolve it : (

I know we have been drilling down the Media Player DVD Player configurations route but I did mention in my first post that I could not install a Game from a DVD in Windows 7, this has got to be a Windows 7 / nVidia / Abit driver issue.
I tried to carry out a Repair Install as above but because of the inability to read DVDs correctly I could not.
I booted using HIRENS boot CD and it boots fine, but the only way to confirm this is a Windows 7 Driver issue would be to use a DVD Boot DVD other than this Windows 7 DVD, does anyone know how I can test this.
I know the Firmware is built into the DVD but in Device Manager there is a driver listed from Microsoft dated 2006, maybe its corrupted.
Gave up with trying to play DVDs but did install Cole 2k Codec pack and managed to actually get VLC to start playing DVDs but that's all it did, exact same problem as WMP DVD play stops and starts.
Anyway I thought I'd try and install a game again from DVD (Gears of War), on inserting the DVD autoplay appeared eventually and I managed to start the install however even though it is installing it is taking forever, the drive keeps stopping and then starting, when it stops the HDD light remains solid, when it starts the HDD light flickers and it reads data.
JonnyAlpha, when I suggested to use the windows 7 disk, i meant at startup - meaning push F8 or 12 (can't remember which one) which will take you to the boot menu and choose DVD drive. Then you could do as I suggested.
Also on another note, have you looked in device manager to see if there is any question mark next to anything on the list? (right click on Computer, Manage, Device Manager)

You said you booted with Hirens boot Cd and everything was fine. I don't know if I understand you when you said something about a boot DVD. You can always put Hirens on a DVD for testing or download and put Unbuntu on a DVD. Sounds like you have a conflict. You listed your specs but did not list your DVD burner. Can you supply that information?
How is your DVd connected, IDE?

Studio - Sorry for misunderstanding your suggestion, I'll boot from Windows 7 DVD and do an upgrade. No errors in device manager.

Just to add - could this be a memory problem, in Task Manager under Perrformance: Physical Memory Total-1790, Cached-982, Available-989, Free-56.
This is with only IE running while I'm typing this?
I see you have been to many sights looking for an answer. Yes, it can be related to your memory.
How much ram is installed?
How large is your pagefile?
Have you tried in safe mode to see if it reads faster?
Tried to boot from Windows 7 DVD to carry out a upgrade, booted fine but when I selected upgrade I was informed that as I had booted form a Windows 7 DVD I would need to boot into Windows and carry out the upgrade from there.

Just booted into safe mode and Task Manager shows: Total-1790, Cached-80, Available-1531, Free 1455, inserted the DVD and double clicked it to open its contents, the HDD light goes solid the timer spins and the progress bar at the top of the Windows Explorer Windows slowly creeps to the right, and still going while I am typing this. So the problem still exists in SAFE mode!!

Have gone to Sony website and cannot find your NEC Optiarc AD-17124S listed. Can you please recheck the model number.

Looks like there is no solution apart from hardware replacement IDE DL DVD Drive for £20.00 as I know an IDE DVD Rom works in this rig already, that's what I had to use to install Windows 7 in the first place.
Fianlly found your drive and there are two things of interest.
They all mention upgrading the firmware to 1.03

One question: does your mobo support this drive? You mentioned you were runnnig XP so you might want to check that out.
The MS Windows compatibility check found no problems with my setup.
I have just been home to my PC workshop and fitted the SATA AD-7170S (The DVD I previously had problems with) to one of my spare PCs an installed Windows 7 without a hitch.
The mobo is an Elitegroup 915-M5.
This confirms that it definitely must be a problem caused by the nVidia Chipset on the Abit AN-M2HD and either the NEC Firmware, the Phoenix Award BIOS or the MS drivers (because the problem affects the install of Windws before any other software gets loaded).
So unless i can get Abit / nVidia or MS to sort out the problem I am left with the following choices:
1. Fit an IDE DL DVD RW
2. Fit a PCI SATA Card (will have to remove my PCI WiFi Card and fit a USB dongle)
3. Replace the motherboard.
4. Stick to XP
suggest you call Abit and ask them for a fix. If they have non then return your mobo and swap for one that is compatible with your DVD.
Well Well Well, I posted a question with nVidia USA support and after trying to get me to uninstall and reinstall Graphics Drivers I reminded them that I had an nVidia 630a Chipset, which I had already told them (It was in the subject line of the question).
They responded with the following answer stating that the 630a Chipset was not supported by Windows 7!!!
After replying to them thanking them for wasting my time I noticed that older nVidia Chipset are included in there list of those that are supported the E.G. the 550.
Legally should it not be down to nVidia to fix the problem?
